Recent Calls for ZCVFD

Some of the pictures and stories shown on the following pages may be disturbing. In many of these cases, the stories are tragic. People have been seriously injured and in some instances, killed. Those involved frequently have suffered very significant, sometimes permanent injuries. The patients, their families, and their friends have all suffered as a result of these events.

We often receive calls from patients or their families asking us about what happened during an incident. The following photos and stories are provided, similar to a newspaper account, for educational and informational purposes. It is our hope that through education, tragic incidents such as these can be prevented.

Every ZCVFD member that responded to these calls sends their thoughts and condolences to those touched by these incidents.

On Tuesday, September 26, 2006, The Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to assist Fluvanna County for a bulldozer on fire. Engine 7 was first to arrive on scene and found a bulldozer that was clearing a lot fully involved. The firefighters quickly put out the heavy equipment fire with water. Luckily, the dozer was not a complete loss, but heavy damage was done to the engine compartment.

Two Car Accident at Busy Intersection PDF Print E-mail

On Monday, September 25, 2006, The Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department, along with Company 1, was dispatched to the intersection of Three Notch Road (Route 250) and Courthouse Road (Route 208) for a two car accident.

Wagon 7 arrived on scene first and found a car in the middle of the intersection with heavy damage. The second vehicle, a large pick-up, sustained only minor damage. Both drivers were treated at the scene and released with only minor injuries.

Car Into Tree with Entrapment PDF Print E-mail

On a sunny Friday afternoon, ZCVFD was dispatched for a reported one vehicle into a tree with a patient trapped in the car. Attack 7 and Wagon 7 arrived on scene at the 4300 Block of Columbia Road and found one critically injured patient that was awake and talking.

Crews immediately used the hydraulic tools to remove the right front door to gain access to the patient and remove him for the vehicle. Fire Medic 6 then transported the patient to UVA Medical Center. After State Police investigated the scene, crews were back in service in less than an hour.

Truck & Camper Accident PDF Print E-mail

On a sunny Friday morning, ZCVFD was dispatched for a reported truck and camper accident on Interstate 64 westbound at the 134 mile marker. When units first arrived on scene, they discovered the camper resting across the left travel lane of the interstate and what appeared to be a truck in the trees in the median.

Upon closer inspection, the emergency crews discovered the camper had actually blown a tire which caused the pick-up truck to lose control and swerve into the median. The driver did an amazing job bringing his truck to a stop within inches of the trees and had actually no damage to the front of his truck. Miraculously, no one was injured in this potentially dangerous accident.

Two Tractor Trailer Accident PDF Print E-mail

Shortly before 8pm on Thursday, July 6th, one tractor trailer was exiting Interstate 64 westbound and struck another tractor trailer that was headed northbound on James Madison Highway (Route 15). The force of the accident pushed the second tractor trailer into the median and was close to tipping onto its side. Both northbound lanes of James Madison Highway were shut down for approximately 90 minutes until wrecker crews could clear the blocked road. Luckily, no one was injured.

This intersection is one of the most dangerous intersections at Zion Crossroads and accidents are frequent as vehicles are coming off the busy I-64.
