Shortly before 1 in the morning, ZCVFD was dispatched to the 143 mile marker on Interstate 64 for a report of a tractor trailer overturned with unknown injuries. ZCVFD arrived to find a flatbed tractor trailer overturned in the left lane with it’s full load of lumber strewn across both travel lanes of the Interstate.
The driver of the tractor trailer was out walking around the scene and was luckily uninjured in the accident. Firefighters soon discovered large amounts of diesel fuel leaking from the truck and spilling into the median. The scene was upgraded to a Hazmat response and crews quickly tried to contain the recently topped off tanks. Environmental Contractors were called in to clean the spill, which was estimated more than 200 gallons of fuel was spilled into the median.
It took crews more than 7 hours to re-open the Interstate after the fuel spill was cleaned and the load of lumber was cleared. State Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
