On Thursday, October 25, 2007, The Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the 3600 block of Campbell Road for car accident with reported injuries.
Units were on the scene within minutes of being dispatched shortly before 11pm, to discover a small car that struck a tree head-on at a high rate of speed. The female driver was trapped inside the vehicle and Company 7 added another engine company, East Rivanna Company 2, to the call for assistance.
A medical helicopter was requested, but due to the heavy rains in the area at the time, all helicopters were grounded. Medical units were arriving on scene as ZCVFD began extrication of the patient from the car, which was completed in less than 10 minutes.
The driver was transported to University of Virginia Medical Center, a level 1 trauma facility, in Mineral Medic 25, where she succumbed to her injuries. The accident is still under investigation, however speed is a factor.
Fire units cleared the scene around 1:30am Friday morning.
