When the members decided to host our first Poker Run event , we didn’t know what to expect or if anyone would even show up. The number of participants and the incredible feedback we received blew us away. There was no question we needed to make this an annual event. A Poker Run is an organized motorcycle event where riders travel over a prescribed course and at designated stopping points, select a card. At the end of the run, the person with the best poker hand wins a prize.
On Saturday, July 12th, almost 60 bikers and motorcycle enthusiasts arrived for a beautiful sunny ride through Central Virginia. Participants made their way across to four different checkpoints, collecting cards and chances to win prizes. Along with monetary donations, ZCVFD also collected new toys for our December Toy Lift operation, a new event scheduled for Saturday, December 6th at the Lowe’s parking lot.
“I had asked several of the riders how the run was, and everyone was really pleased at how well the event was put together,” said Bev Morris, ZCVFD Auxiliary President. “We couldn’t have done this event without all the countless volunteers that made it such a great success!”

Emergency Medical Services Week at Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department marks its 16th anniversary
in 2008, promoting health and safety through awareness and
education. The EMT's of ZCVFD and its EMS
partners throughout Louisa County are featuring free services, demonstrations, and
educational opportunities throughout the county. Make sure you help us celebrate these fine and dedicated volunteers and professionals that serve Louisa County.
To celebrate this year, we are providing a FREE Stroke Guide that can be downloaded on our website. Stroke is the 3rd leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability, and recognizing the first signs of a Stroke is key to survival.
EMS
Week is sponsored by the American College of Emergency Physicians
(ACEP). Education and prevention are two important ways we can keep
ourselves and our families safe from harm.

The Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department recently took delivery on a new state-of-the-art fire engine. The 2008 Smeal Sirius Custom Pumper will become the station's primary piece of equipment for motor vehicle accidents and will back-up other apparatus on fire calls.
"This new truck is the result of some very much appreciated Louisa County capital funding, which was spearheaded by Mr. Richard Havasy, the Green Springs Magisterial District Supervisor . Our membership has almost a year of hard work in the design of this apparatus," said Fire Chief Ricky Bywaters. "The western end of the county has seen a lot of new growth and development which was recognized by our Board of Supervisor's who eventually approved the funding. This new engine will be a great addition to our department and provide a huge benefit to our community."
