At 6:30 pm on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, the Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Mallory Road and Route 250 for a single-car accident with entrapment. Wagon 7 and Car 7 were enroute within seconds of the dispatch and 911 Operators also advised that the car was on fire.
Wagon 7 and Car 7 arrived on scene to find a vehicle that was on its side and was fully engulfed in fire. Firefighters quickly went to work to extinguish the fire as rescue personnel began to assess the patient. Unfortunately, the victim, a 19-year-old male perished in the fire.
State Police say the white Chevy Monte Carlo veered off the road and hit an embankment. The car went airborne and struck a tree. The car then burst into flames with the driver still inside the car. Multiple bystanders attempted to put out the fire and do everything they could to save the man inside the vehicle, but the fire became too intense.
Company 7 was on scene for several hours, assisting State Police with the investigation and then extricated the victim for transport to Richmond to the State Medical Examiner for identification. The accident is still under investigation by the Virginia State Police.
