Recent Calls for ZCVFD

Attention

Some of the pictures and stories shown on the following pages may be disturbing. In many of these cases, the stories are tragic. People have been seriously injured and in some instances, killed. Those involved frequently have suffered very significant, sometimes permanent injuries. The patients, their families, and their friends have all suffered as a result of these events.

We often receive calls from patients or their families asking us about what happened during an incident. The following photos and stories are provided, similar to a newspaper account, for educational and informational purposes. It is our hope that through education, tragic incidents such as these can be prevented.

Every ZCVFD member that responded to these calls sends their thoughts and condolences to those touched by these incidents.

On the evening of July 29th, 2009, a vehicle carrying four teenagers back to their home in Lynchburg after a day at the amusement park, Kings Dominion, lost control and hit the guardrail. The vehicle was then struck by another car, trapping the driver and ejecting one of the passengers. Crews from Company 7 and Company 1, along with Louisa County Emergency Services worked to free the driver, who was in serious condition. The ejected passenger was also transported to UVA Medical Center. In all, there were 3 patients, and one passenger that was uninjured. The driver of the car that struck the vehicle carrying the teenagers was also uninjured. Crews cleared the scene after about an hour. State Police is investigating the cause of the accident.

Overturned Truck on Bybee Road

In the early morning hours of Monday, April 13th, 2009, the Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the intersection of Route 250 and Bybee Road for a pick-up truck that had overturned with the driver trapped inside. Engine 7-1, Attack 7 and Trauma 7-3 arrived on scene and after stabilizing the vehicle, assisted the driver out of the truck. Medic 9-1 transported the patient with minor injuries to UVA Medical Center. It is believed that alcohol might have played a role in the accident, however Virginia State Police is still investigating the accident and charges were still pending. There was some minor property damage to a business located near the intersection. Units cleared the scene after about an hour.

Accident on Route 15

On Thursday, October 16, 2008, the Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched at aproximately 10:30 am along with Orange County Company 24 to a 4 Car MVA with injuries just south of Boswells Tavern on James Madison Highway. Route 15 was completely shut down and traffic was backed up in both directions for miles. Squad 24 and Engine 7-1 arrived on location about the same time. Luckily, there was only one injury from this incident and the patient was taken to UVA by Louisa County Emergency Services Medic 91. Engine 7-1's crew assisted with packaging the patient and cleanup of the accident. Units were on scene for about an hour. The cause of the accident is under investigation by Virginia State Police.

Boswells Tavern

Around 10:40 pm on Sunday, October 26th, the Zion Crossroads Volunteer Fire Department along with Trevilians Fire Company 6 was dispatched to Boswells Tavern (Intersection of Routes 15 and 22) for an accident involving a tractor-trailer with entrapment.

Support 7 was in the area on another call and responded to the scene. The tractor-trailer flatbed, carrying shredded recycled rubber, flipped over while heading southbound on Route 15. The truck took out 2 large trees and came very close to striking power lines. The driver self extricated and was checked out by Louisa County Emergency Services on Fire/Medic 7-1 and had no injuries.

Virginia Department of Transportation was called in to assist with the removal of the large trees, and also Dominion Power. Louisa County Sheriff’s office assisted with traffic control. Units remained on scene until the vehicle was removed from the roadway. Units cleared up around 2 am. Virginia State Police are still investigating the cause of the accident.
